Standardizing the translation of municipalities.

Four episodes in, and I’ve already discovered one thing that I wish I had done right at the beginning of the podcast: Get a better handle on the hierarchy of municipalities during this period and standardize their English translation. As a result, over the first few episodes, some places were translated as one level of municipality (e.g., county), but other places on the same administrative level were translated as something else (e.g., commandery).

So, to clean up this mess, I am now going to adhere to the hierarchy laid out at threekingdoms.wikia.com:

  • Provinces (zhōu )
  • Prefectures (jùn ) — it’s also known as a commandery, but prefecture rolls off the tongue a bit more easily
  • Counties (xiàn )
  • Cities (chéng 城)
